A warning has been issued to drivers and cyclists alike as new Highway Code rules mean pedestrians always have right of way.
The changes mean that those walking will be permitted to cross the road wherever and whenever they like.
It comes as the new rules alter the Highway Code hierarchy with pedestrians now topping the list.
Currently, other road users - from motorists to cyclists - will only have to give way to pedestrians who have already started to cross the road they into which they are turning.
However, the new rule - Rule H2 - will give priority to those waiting to cross the road as well, reports Manchester Evening News.
It means that if you are looking to turn into a road and a pedestrian is waiting to cross, you are expected to give way.

The changes are set to come into effect from January 29.
There are some concerns over the new law, with worries that it may lead some people to put their lives at risk.
Peter Lorence, a serious injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, said: "We represent too many individuals and families whose lives have been shattered by death and serious injury on our nation’s roads, due to entirely avoidable collisions."
Peter said: "We’re concerned that this significant change poses risks to pedestrians who may assert their rights under the new rules, yet drivers may not be aware of this change.
"It is therefore important for all road users to be aware of the new rules, to ensure everyone’s safety and understanding."
