Two dead after crashing into truck trailer near Port Augusta

The scene of the crash on the Augusta Highway.

Two Adelaide men have died after their car crashed into a truck trailer on the Augusta Highway near Port Augusta.

The highway has reopened at Winninowie, about 20 kilometres south of Port Augusta, after being closed for more than seven hours.

Police, ambulance and fire services were called to the scene about 4:25am after reports that a car with two occupants had left the road and crashed into a parked trailer not connected to a truck in a rest bay.

The driver of the car, a 20-year-old Davoren Park man, and the only passenger, a 30-year-old Hendon man, died at the scene.

Major Crash investigators are examining the circumstances of the crash.

Earlier, police were advising northbound traffic to use Horrocks Pass Road and Spear Creek Road, with southbound traffic advised to use Flinders Ranges Way, McConnal Road and Spear Creek Road.
