IT: Computer company Hewlett-Packard is creating 105 highly-skilled jobs at its operation in Ireland, reports RTÉ News. The new jobs, based in Galway, are all described as technical positions and will be in the areas of data architecture, application development and software engineering. More than 70 of the new positions are to be filled immediately with the remainder to be rolled out over the next three years.
Tourism: Glasgow-based holiday firm Barrhead Travel is set to create 50 new jobs to support its expansion plans next year, reports the BBC. The company aims to open five new branches in Scotland over the next three months while also expanding many of its 20 existing branches during 2011. New workers will be put through the company's own in-house training scheme, with most being given comprehensive travel-oriented and sales training. Specialist training will be provided to those with more experience who want to further their career in the travel industry, according to the Evening Times.
Call centre: A new BT call centre set to open next year will bring 450 jobs to West Bromwich. BT said it wanted to ensure as many of the new posts as possible are filled by people from the local area - the borough of Sandwell - according to the BBC. Details about the vacancies will be available in the new year.
Technology: Sony has created 50 new jobs at its plant in Wales after investing £2m into the site. The Pencoed facility will become the leading plant in the manufacture of the next generation of high-definition camcorders and broadcast products, according to Wales Online. A company representative said the firm anticipated that 39 new posts would be in place by January, including operators, technicians and engineers.
Retail: A new furniture store opening in Lincoln will create 30 new jobs, according to the Lincolnshire Echo. Sofa specialist CSL is set to open Boxing Day - new jobs at the store will include drivers, warehousing and admin staff and an in-store team, with further positions anticipated in the future.
