Highly-rated Welsh coach who won World Cup poised to join new England set-up in major 'coup'

Steve Borthwick is poised to bring a highly-rated Welsh coach into his new England set-up in what is being dubbed "a significant coup".

Aled Walters, who won the World Cup with South Africa, is being lined up as the new fitness guru for Owen Farrell, Maro Itoje and Co, according to the Mail.

Walters, from west Wales, is viewed as one of the best conditioning coaches in world rugby and bringing him on board will be seen as a massive boost for England.

He was the man responsible for South Africa's famed fitness during the 2019 World Cup. The Springboks got stronger as the tournament went on and completely blew away Eddie Jones' England with a powerhouse second-half performance in the final.

Walters has since moved to Leicester, where he worked with Borthwick to help the Tigers win the English Premiership. Borthwick is set to go back to his old club as part of his revamp of the England backroom team, with Walters wanted to join the new post-Eddie Jones set-up.

Leicester's chief executive Andrea Pinchen insisted no conversations have taken place as of yet with the RFU about the planned move for Walters. Instead, he is helping Richard Wigglesworth run the team after Borthwick's departure. However, the Mail report that Borthwick does want Walters and that his involvement would be seen "as a significant coup" for England.

Walters was a conditioning coach for the Scarlets, before working in New Zealand with provincial side Taranaki. He then moved into Super Rugby with Australian outfit the Brumbies, before a switch to Munster. South Africa's World Cup-winning boss Rassie Erasmus was coach to the Irish province at the time and took Walters with him when he moved to the Springboks, where they conquered the world.
