Highly-rated former Bristol Rovers and Fleetwood Town target wanted by League of Ireland side

Former Bristol Rovers target Liam Scales could be staying in Ireland.

The UCD defender was heavily linked with the Gas in the summer after they saw off competition from Fleetwood Town for his signature.

Yet the deal fell through, with Rovers boss Graham Coughlan blaming people speaking to the Irish press before the transfer was completed.

However, Scales subsequently alleged the transfer never happened due to 'internal' problems at the Gas.

He said to RTE: "I was in talks with  Bristol Rovers.

"I was under the impression it was going to happen.

"Unfortunately there were issues on their side of it. I'd stopped playing for UCD to give myself a couple of weeks' break to go over and be fresh.

"In the couple of weeks I took off it fell through. It was completely out of my control. I couldn't have done anything differently.

"UCD couldn't have done anything differently. It was internal problems in  Bristol Rovers  that stopped it.

"It's in the past, it happens in football. Right now I'm not thinking about it.

"I suppose at the end of the season I'll have a month or so to see if anything comes up. If there's a possibility I'd love to take it.

"I'd love to go full-time. That's been my ambition. It's something I hope to do, either abroad or in Ireland."

With Scales now out of contract at the Students following the end of the League of Ireland season, it was thought that Rovers could renew their interest in the Republic of Ireland under-21 international, who has already turned down Manchester City in search of first-team football.

However, the Irish Sun report that League of Ireland side St Patrick's Athletic are keen on Scales after a fifth-placed finish in the division this season.

Along with that, St Pat's are also linked to another former Rovers target, Dundalk midfielder Robbie Benson.
