Popular Bristol pub for Sunday roasts wrongly given one star food hygiene rating

An acclaimed Kingsdown pub has received an apology after being incorrectly given a one-star food hygiene rating.

Bristol City Council gave a single star to The Green Man, in Alfred Place, meaning 'major improvement necessary' after an inspection on January 30.

This was listed on the Food Standards Agency (FSA) website – but the correct rating was three stars, or 'generally satisfactory'.

The Green Man, which was lauded for its "popular Sunday roasts" in the Good Pub Guide 2019, asked the council for clarification on its rating.

An environmental health officer replied on March 26: "Please accept my apologies for your incorrect rating which is on the web page as a one but should be a three.

Bristol restaurant owner 'feared for life' during customer's 'racist attack'

"I will amend the rating to the correct three rating and it should be on the Food Standards web page in two weeks maximum.

"I will also discuss with my manager as to how this error occurred and any actions needed to prevent it re-occurring."

The correct rating now appears on the FSA website.

The Green Man has been classed as 'generally satisfactory' for management of food safety and cleanliness of facilities.

And it was found to be 'good' for hygienic food handling.

One of Bristol's longest-running fish and chip shops Kingsdown Fried Fish is closing

A Bristol City Council spokesperson said: “We apologise for the error that led to this establishment being listed as having a one-star hygiene rating, instead of the correct rating of three stars.

“We have amended this, with the correct result appearing on the Food Standards Agency website.

“We will be taking a thorough look at our processes, to make sure something like this does not happen again.”

The pub did not wish to comment on the mistake.

The Good Pub Guide says of the business: "Cosy local with country pub feel, bare boards and dark woodwork, well kept Dawkins and guests, real cider, several wines by the glass and around 60 gins, extensive burger menu and popular Sunday roasts, friendly knowledgeable staff; background and regular live music, Weds quiz, free wi-fi; children and dogs (on leads) welcome, wheelchair access possible with help, open all day Fri and Sat, till 9pm Sun, from 4pm other days."
