Highly addictive illegal drugs worth €80,000 seized by Revenue officers in Dublin

Over 40,000 highly addictive illegal tablets worth €80,000 have been seized by Revenue officers in Dublin.

The drugs, suspected to be Alprazolam, were discovered at the Dublin Parcel Hub yesterday.

The 12.9 kilos of medicine originated from India and was destined for a Dublin address.

Alprazolam is a short-acting benzodiazepine used to treat anxiety and panic disorders.

It is also one of the most common prescribed psychiatric medicine in countries like the US.

According to a drug website managed by the HSE, users can quickly become addicted to benzodiazepines physically and psychologically and find it hard to cope without them.

A Revenue spokesman said they are now investigating with intention to prosecute.

He added: “These seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal drugs and medicines in the shadow economy.

“If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal products, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.”
