Highlights - Wimbledon day three

LONDON (Reuters) - Highlights of the third day at Wimbledon, the third Grand Slam tournament of the year, on Wednesday (times GMT):

1714 HEARTBREAK FOR LOCAL HOPE EDMUND

Briton Kyle Edmund surrendered a two-set lead before going down 4-6 4-6 7-6(3) 6-3 6-4 to Spain's Fernando Verdasco in a marathon encounter lasting three hours and 43 minutes.

"I'm a little tired. It's never easy to beat a player like Kyle, even more here," Verdasco told the BBC.

"The match was complicated in the first and second set and I was just trying to stay in the match and keep fighting even if things weren't going my way but I was able to come back slowly point after point."

1615 KHACHANOV OUTLASTS LOPEZ

Russian 10th seed Karen Khachanov bounced back after losing the first set to beat 37-year-old Feliciano Lopez 4-6 6-4 7-5 6-4 after the Spaniard saved numerous match points, much to the crowd's delight at Court One.

Although Lopez, playing in his 70th consecutive Grand Slam, won 48 net points and smashed 62 winners, he was undone by a rising unforced error count that allowed Khachanov to progress to the third round.

1552 OPELKA REVEALS NBA "REGRET"

Reilly Opelka may be through to the third round at a Grand Slam for the first time but the American wishes he could have been a basketball player, as he towers over most of them.

Asked in a news conference why he was not in the NBA, the 21-year-old said: "Good question... I wish I was. I regret it every day ... that's pretty much all I'm going to say."

Opelka was asked to clarify his height. "I've answered this question, like, 150 times. It's the same as it was yesterday, and, I don't know. Close, 6'11", 7'0". Not sure," he said.

1447 FABBIANO FELLS GIANT KARLOVIC

Italy's Thomas Fabbiano, a diminutive 5ft 8in, who stunned seventh seed Stefanos Tsitsipas in his opener, endured a second five-setter in as many rounds to edge past 6ft 11in Ivo Karlovic 6-3 6-7(6) 6-3 6-7(4) 6-4 in a little over three hours.

1412 MEDVEDEV OVERCOMES POPYRIN

Belgium's David Goffin advanced with a routine 6-2 6-4 6-3 victory over Jeremy Chardy while Czech Jiri Vesely joined him in the third round by beating Pablo Cuevas 4-6 7-6(5) 6-4 6-4.

1312 PLISKOVA STROLLS PAST PUIG

The Czech third seed set up a clash with Taiwan's Hsieh su-Wei who beat Kirsten Flipkens 7-6(3) 6-3.

1207 SVITOLINA THROUGH AFTER GASPARYAN RETIRES

Russian Margarita Gasparyan, who beat Elina Svitolina in the first round at Birmingham last month, moved towards another upset against the Ukrainian by taking the first set 7-5 before a leg injury forced her to quit while trailing 5-6 in the second.

Frenchman Benoit Paire also progressed after Serb Miomir Kecmanovic retired due to an injury while trailing 7-6(5) 6-4.
