Highlands road sealed off by bomb squad after unexploded device found near barracks

A road in the Highlands has been closed to traffic following the discovery of an old explosive device.

Police Scotland said the B9006 was shut between Ardersier and Fort George, an army barracks and former artillery fortification.

The ordnance was found on the nearby shoreline of the Moray Firth and has been described as "historic" by officers.

A Royal Navy bomb disposal team was expected to arrive at the scene during the evening.

Constructed in the 18th Century, Fort George was used as a military base during both world wars, and parts of the site continue to operate as barracks.

A police spokesman said: "The device is believed to be historic and a cordon has been put in place as a precaution. The coastal path between Ardersier and Fort George is also closed due to the device.

"Royal Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal has been informed and are anticipated to attend this evening.

"An alternative route is available by using the unclassified road via Kirkton. However, motorists are advised this is a single track road and unsuitable for larger vehicles."
