Highlands High School voted Scotland's 'most scenic'

A high school in Fort William has just been voted the most scenic in the country - thanks to its stunning backdrop of Ben Nevis.

Lochaber High School attracted over 20,000 votes in the Twitter poll run by the TES Magazine (formerly the Times Educational Supplement) as a bit of fun in the build-up to Christmas.

Photographs of nearly 50 schools from across the whole of Scotland were submitted after TES editor Henry Hepburn put the call out on Twitter.

"Early in November, a tweet appeared in my timeline highlighting a job at a school in the Western Isles," Henry explained. "It was accompanied by a stunning photo of the school.

"It got me thinking about how many beautiful locations there must be for schools in Scotland."

On a whim, he put a call out on Twitter and incredible photos from schools began to roll in.

After he created a "world cup" of scenic Scottish schools with the entries, Lochaber emerged as the overall winner on Christmas Eve after defeating fellow finalists Morgan Academy from Dundee in a poll that drew around 3,500 votes.

Henry added that it feels like everyone who took part was a winner due to the array of spectacular photo entries, he said: "Aside from letting us all see some breathtakingly picturesque settings for schools, the whole contest has been a reminder that schools are a focal point for communities - places that people rally around, root for and care deeply about.

"At the end of such a long and difficult year for Scottish education, it's been an absolute treat to organise all this - but it wouldn't have amounted to very much at all without schools and their communities up and down the land getting so involved.

"Congratulations once again to Lochaber High and to all the other many school communities that threw themselves into this with such gusto."

Speaking about the win, Head Teacher at Lochaber High, Scott Steele, said: “We are delighted to be recognised as the most scenic school in Scotland. It is a privilege to be able to work each day in our beautiful highland surroundings.

"We would like to thank our pupils, staff and local community for getting involved in the competition and giving us their vote.

"We are lucky to have the building we have, in such a stunning location with Ben Nevis and surrounding mountains as the backdrop to our classrooms.”
