Highland Games events return to Shotts despite Covid restrictions

Traditional Scottish Highland Games events returned to Shotts despite Covid restrictions.

The competitors have not been able to take part in their sport during the pandemic and have been keen to get back on the Scottish Heavy events circuit.

Jan Dearie, Shotts Highland Games sports convener and her son Paul, who is a heavy eventer himself, organised a competition at Hannah Park with qualified judges Andy Currie, Walter and Lynne Weir, and Peter Hart.

The day was sponsored by Shotts Highland Games Association and was carefully planned to meet the Covid restrictions.

There were no spectators but Games Chairman Robert Williams and his wife June were on hand to give the competitors and officials a welcome to Shotts.

Although it was not possible to stage the discipline of throwing the hammer, the ten competitors gave impressive displays in events such as putting the shot and tossing the caber.

Chairman Robert Williams said: “When the Association had to discontinue Shotts Games in 2019, the members agreed that, where possible, we would support events and people involved in traditional Scottish events.

“We have supported a highland dancing competition and a young piper’s tuition in the past.

“This heavies competition was, of necessity, different but we were delighted to have the men back in Shotts and, with the support of Shotts Bon Accord who allowed the use of Hannah Park, we were pleased to make it possible for the contest to take place.

“The heavy events were always popular at the Games and it was good to revive the traditions.”

The overall winner on the day was Kyle Randalls; second overall was Daniel Carlin who also won the caber competition; and third overall was Craig Winslow.
