Highland dancer back in her kilt just six months after surgeons put 15 bolts in her spine

A talented Highland dancer is back in her kilt just six months after she endured seven hours of surgery – which left her with 15 bolts in her spine.

Isla Robertson, 15, feared she would never be able to dance again after she developed a curve in her back, caused by Scheuermann’s Kyphosis.

The schoolgirl was left in pain and was devastated when she had to give up dancing – which she has enjoyed since she was just six years old.

But medics performed surgery to straighten her back, meaning she will dance again.

Isla, from Greenock, said: “I just want to compete again, even if I come last.

“My aim is to dance at next year’s Gourock Highland Games and I’m taking part in my dance school’s show in November.”

Two years ago, Isla was diagnosed with Scheuermann’s Kyphosis after suffering from excruciating back pain.

The condition causes the front sections of the spine to grow slower than the back during childhood.

Last November, she underwent the seven-hour op at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Edinburgh.

Isla said: “I didn’t want to be like that forever.

“My biggest fear was that I wouldn’t be able to dance again.”
