Highland breakdown firm blasts 'clowns' who drove from Glasgow to go hill walking near Skye

A car breakdown firm based in the Highlands has blasted the "clowns" who flouted the ongoing lockdown to drive from Glasgow to go trekking near Skye over the weekend.

The group from the city made the 150-mile plus trip to the Glenshiel area on Friday with the intention of climbing on the Glen Shiel Ridge - a popular spot for Munro-baggers.

And they had to seek the help of the breakdown firm after they got into car trouble near the hiking route, resulting in a 'social distance recovery' of the car to a nearby town.

The vehicle was put on the back of a breakdown truck and taken to Kyle of Lochalsh, where repair work was undertaken - with the ongoing restrictions meaning the occupants couldn't leave their car to prevent interaction with the recovery driver.

Morar Motors, based in Kyle of Localsh, said in a Facebook post that the group's actions were "putting the emergency services at risk on the non-essential journey as well as others on the road".

The occupants were charged "a double bank holiday callout" and they were reported to the authorities for their actions, with Moray Motors advising that the callout fee was donated to the local emergency services, Kintail Mountain Rescue and Kyle Lifeboat.

The post by Moray Motors read: "Clowns who still think its okay to drive 150 miles from Glasgow for a bank holiday weekend climbing on the Glen Shiel Ridge.

"Putting the emergency services at risk on the non essential journey as well as others on the road.

"Who do they think is going to rescue them when they break a leg on the top of a mountain?"

Ross, Skye and Lochaber MP Ian Blackford told The Press and Journal: “When you consider the challenges Skye is facing with Covid-19 and recognition of the responsibility we all have to control the spread of the virus, it is the height of recklessness for anyone to think they can drive a long distance to the west Highlands to go for a walk in the hills."

It's one of a number of incidents that have occurred over recent weeks where drivers have flouted the ongoing restrictions to make non-essential trips across the country.

With yesterday Glasgow Live reporting how a London family were caught by police flaunting the lockdown for an attempted 'three day break' in Motherwell.
