Highest weekly deaths from coronavirus recorded in the North West since first wave of pandemic in May

The North West had the highest number of weekly deaths involving coronavirus in any English region in the first week of November, new statistics have revealed.

Registered deaths involving coronavirus increased week-on-week in every region of England in the week to November 6, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) found.

The North West region had 568 deaths involving Covid-19 registered in the week ending November 6 – the highest number since the week ending May 15, according to the ONS, during the first wave of the pandemic.

In Yorkshire and the Humber, 329 Covid-19 deaths were registered in the week to November 6: again, the highest for the region since the week to May 15.

In North East England, 152 Covid-19 deaths were registered: the highest since the week to May 22.

A total of 1,937 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending November 6 mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate, the ONS said.

This is the highest number of deaths recorded in the two nations since the week ending May 22. It compares to 1,379 deaths recorded in the previous week (to October 30) and is a jump of 40 per cent.

The figures also show there have now been more than 68,000 deaths involving coronavirus in the UK.

It has been mentioned on 65,546 death certificates, the ONS found.

But since the statistics were compiled, a further 2,228 deaths are known to have occurred in England, plus 106 in Scotland, 143 in Wales and 90 in Northern Ireland, according to additional data published on the government’s coronavirus dashboard.

Together, these totals mean that so far 68,113 deaths involving Covid-19 have taken place in the UK.

Yesterday, the government announced a further 213 people had died within 28 days of testing positive for Covid-19 as of Monday.
