Highest total of weekly coronavirus-related deaths recorded in England and Wales since March

England and Wales have recorded the highest total of weekly coronavirus-related deaths since March as the country settles into the easing lockdown restrictions.

A total of 571 deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending August 13 included 'Covid-19' on the death certificate, according to the Office for National Statistics – up 8% on the previous week.

It is the highest total since 719 deaths in the week of March 26.

Around one in 18 deaths registered in the week to August 13 (5.5 per cent) mentioned Covid-19 on the death certificate.

In the UK, there have been a total of 156,958 deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate, according to the ONS.

The highest number of deaths on a single day relating to Covid-19 was on January 19 with 1,484.

During the first coronavirus wave, the peak on a single day was 1,461 deaths relating to Covid-19.

Also in the week of August 13, figures show that 57 care home residents died with Covid-19 included on their death certificate, making the total number of deaths 42,805.

The ONS data applies to care home resident deaths in all settings and not exclusively care homes.
