Highest number of daily Covid cases in the UK recorded with more than 10,000 Omicron cases confirmed in total

The UK has today recorded the highest number of daily Coronavirus cases since the pandemic began.

78,610 lab-confirmed Covid-19 cases have been recorded in the UK as of 9am today (Wednesday 15 December).

The UK Health Security Agency said 4,671 of these cases are of the Omicron variant.

It brings the total confirmed Omicron cases in the UK to 10,017 and the total number of Covid cases overall to 10.9 million.

It comes as the new Covid Plan B measures were passed in parliament on Tuesday (14 December) night.

NHS Covid passes will be needed for access to nightclubs and large venues from today as part of the government's efforts to slow the spread of the new Omicron variant of coronavirus.

NHS workers will need to be vaccinated by April and face masks have been made mandatory in certain settings.

But, with almost 100 Conservative MPs voting against the mandatory passes measure, Boris Johnson suffered the largest rebellion of his premiership yet.
