Higher exams in Scotland cancelled next year, says education secretary John Swinney

Higher exams will be cancelled in Scotland next year, the Government has announced.

Education Secretary John Swinney today told MSPs that "teacher judgement" will be used as part of a new model to form grades.

National 5 exams due to take place next year have already been cancelled.

Mr Swinney said in his statement there will be no Higher or Advanced Higher exams next year.

Scottish Greens MSP Ross Greer said: “The Scottish Greens have called for all 2021 exams to be cancelled since it became clear in May that the level of disruption would make a fair exam diet impossible, so today’s announcement is overdue but welcome.

“It provides the clarity that teachers, parents and, most importantly, pupils had demanded."

It comes as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon confirmed that all 11 local authorities currently in Tier 4 of Covid restrictions will move to Tier 3 as of Friday.

South, East and North Ayrshire will all be placed in Tier 3 as part of the new regulations moving forward.
