'Higher calibre' - Championship rivals told to 'get in there first' for Nottingham Forest star

“Cardiff's potential promotion could open the door for a higher calibre of player in their right-back position next season”, according to Wales Online.

Given Matty Cash’s terrific form so far this season, it’s no surprise to see the midfielder-cum-defender linked with a move away from Nottingham Forest.

Such were the standard of Cash’s displays before the January transfer window opened, European giants AC Milan were monitoring his situation, along with Premier League outfit West Ham.

And now, Forest’s play-off rivals Cardiff City are said to be in the market for a new right-back, and Wales Online believe Cash would be a sound signing for Neil Harris’ Bluebirds, if they were to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

Jazz Richard’s is leaving South Wales, while loan star Dion Sanderson will likely return to Wolves, leaving a gaping hole on the right side of City’s back line.

“Like Cardiff, Nottingham Forest deploy a 4-2-3-1 formation and should the Bluebirds pip their play-off rivals to promotion, then Cash could be the best candidate to slot in on the right of their defence,” wrote Nottinghamshire Live’s sister paper.

“A former winger by trade, manager Sabri Lamouchi deployed him as a wing-back in a surprising move this season, but it’s a decision that has proved to be a huge success. As you may expect from a former winger, he possess pace, great technical skill and an eye-catching final ball delivery.

“He’s registered five assists so far this season and has even chipped in with three goals of his own.

“Beyond his abilities going forward, his 6ft1in frame means he is imposing in physical duels and also tenacious in the tackle.

“A move to the Premier League won’t be too far away for Cash, therefore Cardiff would do well to get in there first should they achieve promotion.”
