'High value' business traveller exemption will not apply in Scotland

Deputy First Minister John Swinney has confirmed that there will be no changes to traveller exemptions list in Scotland despite changes to the rules in England.

Last night the UK Government confirmed that 'high value business travellers' will not have to quarantine when they return from international travel.

Announcing the move on Twitter, the transport secretary Grant Shapps, said “high-value business travellers” would be exempt from quarantine rules in an effort to boost the economy, “subject to specific criteria being met”.

It is understood that the exemption will apply to senior company executives, such as directors or their equivalents, either returning or travelling to England who can deliver “significant” economic benefit. They will only qualify for the exemption if their work requires them to be there in person.

Speaking at the daily coronavirus briefing, Mr Swinney said about international travel: "Very often on a Friday we provide an update on the quarantine exemption list."

"Following our usual risk assessments I can confirm that the Scottish Government has not made any change to that list this week."

"As you may be aware the UK Government announced last night a number of changes to the quarantine rules in England. Those changes exempt certain categories of people, working in certain sectors, from the requirement to self-isolate."

"I want to emphasise these are changes that apply only in England, and that they do not apply here in Scotland. The quarantine requirements in this country are unchanged."

Anyone travelling to Scotland from a place that is not on the exemption list will be required to self-isolate for 14 days upon their return.
