High Street retailer John Lewis to close Scottish store

High street retailer John Lewis is set to close one of their Scottish stores, the company has confirmed.

The branch in the Bon Accord Centre in Aberdeen has been open since 1989 but its closure was initially announced in March.

Despite various calls from campaigners, local politicians and business leaders, 265 people are set to lose their jobs.

However, those employed for over two years there will be able to access a “retraining fund” of up to £3,000.

Those who have worked at John Lewis for over a year will receive two weeks pay for every year of work there.

Meanwhile, those with less than a year employed there will receive an extra weeks contractual pay as well as their normal redundancy package.

Branch Manager Jamie Wishart said: “For the past 31 years, generations of partners have served Aberdeen and the surrounding communities with pride and love.

“It is therefore with immense sadness that our time here has come to an end. I would like to thank our customers for their loyalty and for the outpouring of support we have received in these past few months – it’s been both heartwarming and uplifting.”

The news comes as the Edinburgh branch of the retail giant based in the new St James Quarter underwent a multi-million pound refurbishment last month.
