High Street is still Swansea city centre's most crime-ridden area

Swansea High Street is the city's most crime-ridden area - despite claims the street is improving.

Statistics released to WalesOnline by South Wales Police via the Freedom of Information Act have revealed that 464 incidents in High Street were recorded by police in 2019.

Some of these cases included assault with injury and assault on a police officer as well attempted burglary.

Oxford Street had the second highest amount of crime reported in 2019 with 417 cases followed by Wind Street (328), The Quadrant (300) and Carmarthen Road (283).

Last year, High Street was shortlisted as one of the best high streets in the UK- just months after it was dubbed by a national newspaper as possibly "one of the worst" in the country.

Speaking in February, bar manager at Elysium Gallery & Bar Kirsty Guise said that she has seen an improvement in High Street and there's now a higher police presence.

"The footfall seems a lot safer, I can finish here and 2am in the morning and walk to my car in the train station car park and not feel threatened, I feel safe.

"We rarely have any issues," she said.

Talking about the latest figures, Chief Inspector James Ratti said: ”Swansea has a vibrant city centre which attracts large amounts of people throughout the year for shopping and events and it is the second largest city in Wales.

“The High Street is a major street which runs through the centre covering residential areas, retail outlets and restaurants. Like all city centre streets throughout the UK we do therefore have crime.

“Our city centre neighbourhood and response policing teams, with specialist teams such as the Op Sceptre team, daily patrol these areas and work alongside partners such as British Transport Police, the city centre BID team and the council to keep our city centre a safe place to live and work.”
