High Street closed in Merthyr as road floods and begins to fall apart

A busy high street has been submerged in water after a road began to "give way".

Dowlais High Street has been closed as highway teams and Welsh Water inspect a damaged sewer pipe in Merthyr Tydfil.

Footage taken of the site shows a stream of water flowing from a large crack in the road and running down the street.

It comes after the same road was closed in October last year after a pavement collapsed.

At the time, the road was left covered in rocks and debris following heavy weather caused by Storm Callum.

A post shared on Facebook said: "Be Careful on Dowlais High Street.

"Between the Guest Keen and the junction of Market Street, the road is starting to give away.

A local resident added: "The sewerage system collapsed [last year] so it was shut for 11 weeks. It opened just before Christmas and this is another section, not the same section that was fixed."

A spokeswoman for Merthyr council said: "There is a collapsed culvert on Dowlais Street.

"We were made aware of it and our highway team were up there. For safety reasons, the street has been closed off.

"Welsh Water are inspecting [the site]."

A Welsh Water spokesman said: “We are aware of a section of damaged sewer pipe on High Street in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, and we have a team on site investigating the issue.

“Due to the location, we have had to temporarily close a section of High Street while we carry out the repair work and a diversion is in place.

“We are very sorry for the inconvenience this is causing and assure everybody affected that we are doing all we can to get this resolved as quickly as possible.”
