High street bank announces closure of over 100 branches

Santander has announced plans to close 111 branches across the country due to the shift to mobile and online banking.

And staff at Santander in East Kilbride breathed a sigh of relief after the store dodged the closure.

However, two branches in Glasgow including the Sauchiehall Street and Kilmarnock Road branches are set to shut up shop by the end of August.

The Spanish lender cited changes in customer behaviour and a shift to online banking since the start of the COVID crisis for its decision.

While all 111 branches are to close by August 2021, bosses insisted the majority of those affected are less than three miles from another Santander branch.

"Branch usage by customers has fallen considerably over recent years so we have made the difficult decision to consolidate our presence in areas where we have multiple branches relatively close together," said Adam Bishop, head of branches at Santander.

While branch transactions fell by 50 per cent in 2020, mobile and online transactions have grown by 20 per cent. A third of overall transactions are digital.

About 840 staff will be affected by the closures, although Santander promised to try to find them other jobs within the business.

A network of 452 branches will remain opening following the proposed changes, and all current and business account holders will be able to access their bank at 11,000 Post Offices.

Bosses added staff will contact potentially vulnerable customers by phone to provide individual support in the next five months.

A dedicated phone number is available to provide customers with help and information on the closures (0800 085 0879).

Santander also revealed it is consolidating office sites into six main locations, one of which being in Glasgow, and Milton Keynes is set to become its new corporate head office this year.

Around 5,000 staff based at closing or consolidating sites will be offered new working arrangements combining working from home with access to local collaboration spaces as it pushes through flexible working.
