WASHINGTON _ The race between Republican John Faso and Democrat Zephyr Teachout in New York's 19th Congressional District has exceeded $8.5 million in spending, Federal Election Commission reports show.
Outside spending from independent groups account for $5.87 million of that amount, Poughkeepsie Journal reported.
The End Citizens United PAC spent about $60,000 last week to mail attacks against Faso. Both the National Republican Congressional Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee are making media purchases this month, as well.
Teachout, a Fordham University associate law professor, raised $3.26 million through September. She also has more cash available, with $1.47 million. Faso, a former state assemblyman, raised $2.32 million and has $355,928 in cash on hand.
The open seat race is to replace retiring three-term Republican Rep. Chris Gibson. Gibson has a reputation for bipartisanship and endorsed Faso.
Former presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont endorsed Teachout.
The Rothenberg & Gonzales Political Report/Roll Call rates the race a Tossup.
