High-speed police pursuit ends in Kotara, gun seized

A high-speed police pursuit through multiple Newcastle and Lake Macquarie suburbs on Thursday morning ended with two arrests and a gun seized.

Police were forced to deploy road spikes to bring the vehicle to a stop.

Newcastle City police were responding to a report of a break and enter when they attempted to stop a vehicle on Park Avenue, Kotara.

The vehicle failed to stop and led officers on a high-speed chase just after 6.30am on July 2.

The vehicle sped through several locations including Hillsborough Road in Charlestown, Brunker Road in Adamstown, and Russell Road in New Lambton, coming to an end near Westfield Kotara.

It is understood police were forced to deploy road spikes to bring the vehicle to a stop.

The vehicle stopped at the intersection of Northcott and Wade streets at Kotara about 6.50am.

A man and woman were arrested and have been taken to Newcastle police station.

A handgun was allegedly found when the car was searched. Police said it had been taken for further examination.

A police vehicle was damaged during the incident but no officers have been injured.
