High speed M5 police chase ends in Weston- super-Mare

Police brought to a halt a car following a dramatic high speed chase along the M5 to Weston-super-Mare.

The drama started at around 8.40pm last night after officers saw a car driving at excessive speeds along the M5 between Bridgwater and Burnham-on-Sea.

Officers followed the car along the motorway before it left the M5 at junction 22 for Burnham and travelled towards Weston.

The car was spotted by local residents driving along Drove Road – being followed by police – with some reporting the driver was travelling at speeds of up to 100mph.

It is understood the chase involved marked and unmarked police vehicles.

The car was eventually brought to a halt in Amberey Road on the resort’s Bournville Estate.

A 23-year-old man from Bridgwater was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody.

A police spokesman said: “At 8.40pm last night officers sighted a car driving at excessive speeds on the M5.

“The officers followed the vehicle as it left the motorway at J22 before stopping in Weston-super-Mare.

“A 23-year-old man was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody."
