High-speed chase through Valley, Westside, ends in Malibu

Dec. 18--A two-part, high-speed pursuit Wednesday night that took Los Angeles police through the San Fernando Valley and the Westside ended in Malibu on the Pacific Coast Highway.

The driver, a male suspected of stealing a black BMW, was arrested by police shortly after 9:30 p.m.

The pursuit began at 6:47 p.m. when police spotted the stolen vehicle as the driver headed northbound on Woodman Avenue in the San Fernando Valley, said Officer Chris No, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Police Department.

Erratic driving prompted police to abandon the pursuit, but just after 8 p.m., officers again spotted the vehicle at Sunset Boulevard and Highland Avenue in Hollywood.

There followed a secondary pursuit that skirted the Grove shopping center and later headed westbound on the 10 Freeway into Santa Monica.

"It went all over the place," No said.

The driver drove on sidewalks and blew through busy intersections in an attempt to elude police, according to television news footage of the chase.

The chase ended on the PCH about 9:30 p.m. after police, aided by the California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies, hemmed the car in and detained the driver.
