High-speed chase through suburbs stretches from Jesmond to Shortland

Police have urged witnesses to come forward after a chase through the suburbs overnight.

Officers tried to stop a Kia Sportage at Heaton Street in Jesmond, citing the manner of driving, just after midnight on Saturday, August 15.

The vehicle failed to stop, police said, prompting officers to give chase.

In response to inquiry on Saturday morning, a police spokesperson said the pursuit was called off on Sandgate Road at Shortland after the fleeing vehicle reached high speeds prompting concerns for safety.

Officers were investigating at the weekend, the spokesperson said. Anyone with information, or who may have been in the area at the time and may have dash-cam or mobile footage of the incident, has been urged to contact Newcastle police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
