East Kentwood shooting: Shots fired at high school graduation as cops launch manhunt

Cops in Michigan are currently responding to a shooting at a graduation ceremony at East Kentwood High School.

According to reports, Kent County Sheriff Michele LaJoye-Young said two white cars were involved in a gun exchange between each other. Since then, police have been investigating those who were in a few cars.

Sheriff LaJoye-Young said two people were shot during the exchange. She reported that one was a 40-year-old woman from Grand Rapids who was shot in the abdomen and wrist.

The other was a 16-year-old boy from Texas who was shot in the wrist. She said "My suspicion is that they are just completely bystanders that happened to be here at the time of this gun exchange."

Sheriff LaJoye-Young added that both victims were taken to the hospital and as of 9.45 pm on Thursday, both of them were in stable condition."

The sheriff said her office knew of at least two shooters and, as of 10pm yesterday (Thursday) those suspects are still on the loose.

She added: "I want the community to be alert to these potential suspects tonight. We have no reason to believe they're coming back into the area or that they have a specific target back in this area.

"This scene is secure now, but of course, until we bring this case to resolution, I can't be certain on what their intent is."

Police previously said one suspect was still on the loose. The Kent County Sheriff's Office tweeted at 1am that it was "on scene of a shooting incident at East Kentwood High School.

"One person confirmed to have been shot. The suspect is outstanding at this time. It said an update would be forthcoming."

The gunfire was reported at around 7.20pm local time as a graduation ceremony was being held. Deputies and a teacher at the high school described hearing shots fired. The shooting at the school comes after a series of shootings at graduation ceremonies in the past few weeks.

Kentwood Public Schools Superintendent Kevin Polston released a statement saying the shootings happened after the Crossroads Alternative High School graduation ceremony.

It said: "Law agencies were at the graduation and additional units immediately responded. The school is working with the Sheriff's Department as they investigate.

"When violence occurs within our community, it is both troubling and tragic. We remain committed to the health and safety of our community and will provide support and counselling to any students that need assistance."

The statement added: "School officials noted that 60 students, their family and friends were at the graduation ceremony which occurred at Eastwood High School. In addition, there was a middle school concert that was occurring at the same time in the high school auditorium.

"The incident appears to be an isolated event. Families were able to depart from the school following the incident without problem."
