Plans for a 15-storey apartment complex near Old Market have been rejected.
An outline planning application was submitted to Bristol City Council last year to transform the site known as Leisure Island, just off the Lawrence Hill roundabout, into more than 100 new flats and commercial space.
Developers said they want to refurbish the existing mixed-use Victorian brick terraces and warehouse located on the triangle bit of land, on Easton Road and Lawrence Hill, on the Old Market side of the roundabout.
In its place they wanted to build 122 apartments and commercial and retail space.
The plans included a new 15-storey circular tower in the middle of the site, which would be surrounded by a six-storey perimeter block.
The car wash garage which looks over the roundabout would have been demolished as part of the scheme.
But Bristol City Council has refused the plans on the basis that it would “adversely impact the Conservation Area and views into and out of the area”.
The authority said the taller building was “particularly problematic” in terms of its height, massing and appearance.
The council also cited traffic and environmental concerns for its decision, and said that the design did not meet the policies of the city's local plan.
