High praise for 'brilliant' Food and Drink Festival at Wollaton Park despite pouring rain and soggy fields

Gastronomic fans have praised this year's "brilliant" Food and Drink Festival at Wollaton Park despite the soggy fields and pouring rain.

From DoughNotts' fantastical treats to sizzling Greek souvlaki and even a stall selling ferocious Scotch bonnet chilli sauce - the festival was a hit for anyone and everyone with a love for food.

Celebrity chefs such as former Corrie star Sean Wilson - once known as Martin Platt until 2005 to fans of the soap - and Nottingham's leading nutritional therapist, Eva Humphries, also took to the tents to cook for hundreds of visitors.

Nottinghamshire Live took a trip down on a very wet and windy Saturday afternoon (August 10) to see what it was all about.

Pearl Brown, 73, had come from Stapleford with her two daughters, Delia and Dawn, and their children, to get a taste of everything on offer.

She even managed to bag an autograph from Mr Wilson.

"It is brilliant," she said. "We thought it was going to be wet but there are loads of tents so it doesn't really matter.

"Eva was brilliant. She cooked a pea soup which was all vegetarian and vegan and then we had salmon with this spicy crumble on top.

"She made this raspberry roll which we got to try. It was excellent. She made it look so easy and it was all done from ingredients you would have in your cupboard."

Master of butchery, Johnny Pusztai, who lives in Sherwood, also took to the stage to offer a humorous but informative talk on sausages and other meat.

His father, Dezso, arrived in the UK in 1956 as a refugee from the Hungarian uprising - and Johnny was showcasing his traditional methods of meat preparation straight from his Hungarian roots.

The son of the very man who founded Nottinghamshire's one and only chilli farm, Neal Price, was also a big hit for those wanting to turn up the heat.

Neal's father, Bob, who founded the ChilliBobs farm in Rolleston, died aged 64 from pancreatic cancer earlier this year - but his legacy lives on with his son.

"I love Wollaton Hall so I thought I would make a go of it today," Neal said. "I have developed all of these flavours myself and we've been busy. People know what we're about and the weather is slowly getting better."

Damien Watson and his wife Fiona, of Sandiacre, were at Neal's store to try some of his spicy goods.

Damien, 42, said: "I'm a chilli junkie so that's why I'm here. We came here a couple of years ago and the variety still seems amazing.

"If the sun just popped out we would head straight for the beer tent. We probably will anyway, but for now we're just going to do some shopping."

For those looking for something less fiery, the sweet scent of freshly baked doughnuts drifting from one of the many tents in the fields surrounding Wollaton Hall was drawing many people to DoughNotts' stall.

Its general manager, Amy Mann, said she thought the festival was "wicked".

"I love it," she said. "I had a Thai curry at 10am because we're right next to the stall. I can't wait to try the other stuff later.

"It's my kind of place. I'm in my element."

Established in Nottingham, the company was at the festival selling its handmade, vegan-friendly doughnuts for all to enjoy.

Its director, Wade Smith, 27, added: "It's been a while since we've done anything like this but it has worked out for us. It's nice to do these things."
