Intense campaigning by all parties for the May 10 assembly elections in Karnataka came to an end on Monday with the three main players -- BJP, Congress and JD(S) -- making their last pitch to woo voters. Only door-to-door campaigning will be allowed on May 9.
3/10 - Congress banks on anti-incumbency, BJP pins hope on Modi wave
While the Congress is banking on an anti-incumbency wave that has worked since 1985, the ruling BJP hopes PM Narendra Modi\'s popularity will see them through.
4/10 - BJP held a whopping 400 rallies
BJP national leaders held a total of 206 public meetings and 90 roadshows, while its state leaders held 231 public meetings and 48 road shows, the party said.
5/10 - PM goes all out to woo voters
The BJP relied heavily on PM Modi during the campaigning, especially in the last leg. He held 19 rallies and 6 mega roadshows across the state.
6/10 - Playing the long game
Ahead of the announcement of polls on March 29, PM Modi had visited the state seven times since January to unveil several schemes and projects.
7/10 - ‘Centralised campaign’ by BJP
The BJP’s campaign was largely centralised with the focus being on PM Modi, the ‘double-engine’ government, national issues and programmes. BJP national president J P Nadda, and CMs of BJP ruled states as well as Union ministers like Amit Shah too travelled to various parts of the state for campaigning.
8/10 - Community card
The party also effectively utilised the services of its top leader in Karnataka B S Yediyurappa to counter the attempt by the Congress to build a perception that it was turning anti-Lingayat.
9/10 - Congress focuses on local issues
The Congress’ focus was on local issues, and central leaders like AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra too campaigned in the state.
10/10 - Shift from state leaders
Though the campaign initially centered around its state leaders like Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar, Kharge gave it momentum and thereby prepared the pitch for the party\'s top leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi to join in.
