High Level Bridge reopens to traffic after woman brought to safety

A bridge over the River Tyne was closed during rush hour after concerns were raised for a woman.

Emergency crews attended the scene after reports of concerns for a woman's welfare on the High Level Bridge at approximately 4pm on Tuesday. Crews from Northumbria Police, Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service and North East Ambulance service were all in attendance to provide assistance at the scene.

High Level Bridge was closed off to buses and taxis for two hours during the rush hour while emergency services were on the scene.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said at the time of the incident: "There is an ongoing incident on the High Level Bridge. We are currently at the scene alongside our ambulance and fire service colleagues. We arrived at the scene at 4.04pm."

The force spokesman later added: "The person is now down from the High Level Bridge. The bridge reopened at 6.04pm."

A spokeswoman for the Tyne and Wear Fire Service said: "We have had an appliance in attendance at the High Level Bridge. We arrived after receiving a call at 4.22pm from the police. We left at 5.54pm."

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: "We were called to concerns for a woman's welfare on the High Level Bridge in Newcastle at 4.16pm this afternoon. We dispatched three crews from our Hazardous Area Response Team, who were later stood by police on scene."

The High Level Bridge has now reopened and the woman has been brought to safety.
