High hopes Irish Lincolnshire favourite Patrick Sarsfield is better than a handicapper

Connections of Irish Lincolnshire favourite Patrick Sarsfield hope he can win at the weekend before going on to better things.

Sponsor Paddy Power's 9/2 shot was last seen in action when winning his maiden by four lengths at The Curragh in October, the track where he will return to try and scoop Saturday's €59,000 pot.

The race has been the target for trainer Joseph O’Brien and Chantal Regalado-Gonzalez's gelding, who has owned Group One winners Qualify and Iridessa.

Patrick Sarsfield has met several talented performers in his short career so far, including 2019 Epsom Derby runner-up Madhmoon and Sydney Opera House, who was beaten a neck at the top level in France.

Racing manager Bill Dwan told the sponsors: “It has been the plan to run him in the Lincolnshire for quite a while and hopefully he progresses to stakes company later in the year."

Dwan said racing in Ireland continuing behind closed doors, at Clonmel and Naas so far this week, was 'a good distraction in a difficult time for everyone', as coronavirus continues to impact sport.

Saturday's card at Thurles led to a 192 per cent increase in betting volume in the win markets on the Betfair Exchange and TV viewing figures were healthy.

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games postponed due to coronavirus pandemic

The Paddy Power Irish Lincolnshire will be one of the races broadcast on ITV Racing this weekend, without the action from Dubai World Cup night at Meydan, which has been postponed during the outbreak.

Patrick Sarsfield was one of 38 horses remaining in Saturday's big handicap at the five-day stage.
