Learning at High Blantyre Primary School happens both indoors and out – and their hard work in promoting learning outdoors has recently been commended with a number of top awards.
The work to achieve the awards was carried out in conjunction with community group Bonnie Blantyre, whose assistance was invaluable to the school.
After participating in green activities both in and out of the classroom – including tree planting, visiting a local woodland, reducing carbon emissions and being a woodland ambassador – the school was first awarded the prestigious platinum level of The Green Tree Schools Award by the Woodland Trust.
Then, with some classes completing challenges from the RSBP Wild Challenges Award Scheme, an initiative that is all about investigating wildlife and doing practical things to give nature a safe and welcoming home, their work resulted in the school being award the highest gold level award.
Not only that but the children in primary one and two have been investigating seeds, growing potatoes and vegetables, planting seeds and eventually harvesting the fruits of their labour.
The eco committee and after-school gardening club have also been working hard to make the school grounds look beautiful by weeding as well as planting new shrubs and flowers.
For their continued work on promoting a love of gardening particularly over the past year, the school were delighted to be recognised as a Royal Horticultural Society five-star gardening school.
A school spokesperson said: “The hard work of the children, staff and their invaluable helpers has resulted in the school receiving these numerous awards in a short period of time. “
