High ankle sprain expected to sideline Chiefs DT Xavier Williams for multiple weeks

The Kansas City Chiefs are staggered with injuries and the news isn’t getting any easier to hear.

The most recent update comes on defensive tackle Xavier Williams who left the Week 5 loss against the Colts with an ankle injury. He was visibly in pain as he was helped off the field by the training staff and he did not return to the game. Williams was among the several Chiefs’ players who received an MRI on Monday and multiple reports have confirmed a bad high ankle sprain for Williams.

The Kansas City brass expects him to miss multiple weeks of action as he recovers from this injury.

The possibility of missing any amount of time could lead the Chiefs to make the decision to place Williams on injured reserve. Even if he only misses four weeks, the Chiefs face a numbers crunch on the roster with many players injured, but few season-ending injuries.

Khalen Saunders played in place of Williams and Chris Jones. He didn’t do a bad job either. Still, the Chiefs could use at least another body in the rotation. Eyes will be on practice squad DT Joey Ivie as the week progresses. Look for the team to elevate him to the active roster after deciding upon a corresponding roster move.

The strength of this Chiefs’ defense heading into the season was very clearly the defensive front. With three key pieces injured in Jones, Okafor and Williams, it’s beginning to look a whole lot different.
