Hideo Kojima just unveiled a limited edition Death Stranding 2 CD player, developed in collaboration with km5. Apparently "made possible by Kojima's self-proclaimed love for analog media," (though I don't know who wants to tell them CDs are definitely not analog), the Instant Disc Audio Cp1 combines a Bluetooth-friendly disc spinner with the translucent orange aesthetic that will speak to any retro gamer's heart.
Limited Edition vs Regular CP1
The Death Stranding edition comes in at $199 via km5's own site, but if you're not fussed about that Bluetooth 5.3 or Kojima's own design accents you can also grab the original for $159 at Amazon. You're still getting the wall mounting, wireless connection, and lyric book sleeve at the front.
Like the regular CP1 it's based on, the build allows for a neat window into your current album, but the casing also allows for your lyric booklet (or the included Death Stranding 2-themed cards) to sit in pride of place as well. With rear mounting holes, the idea is that you can throw a CD in, stick the jacket on the front, and have your now-playing in full view on the wall.
Of course, even if that Bluetooth 5.3 version is upgraded from the original 5.0 on the normal model, you're still not going to get the full uncompressed CD experience here.
Audiophiles will be using the accompanying 3.5mm physical connection, but for most of us that sound quality is going to be just fine. Compatible disc formats span CD, CD-R, CD-RW, and MP3, so those old rips are ready to go. A 1,800mAh battery keeps everything running for approximately 7-8 hours (you'll be running somewhere 10 and 15 albums in that time).
The actual aesthetic keeps the BB pod at front of mind, from that bright orange colorway to the small LED 'BB' in the corner that swaps over to a track indicator when you're spinning. The original, for $40 less, comes in black and white, though there is a neon green colorway available for a whopping $209.
Kojima's Death Stranding CD player is a true limited edition drop. While it's still in stock at the time of writing, we're expecting the run to come to an end shortly. It's been up on km5's own site for a couple of days, so physical media revivalists with a flair for the Kojima should be investigating sooner rather than later.
