Everyone still laments the cancelation of Scalebound, especially game director Hideki Kamiya.
In an interview with Cutscenes, Kamiya explains that inexperience in developing online games was a huge factor that led to Scalebound getting canceled. Kamiya, it seems, is still full of regret over the whole ordeal.
“I’m sorry to the players who looked forward to it,” Kamiya said via Cutscenes. “Moreover, I’m sorry to Microsoft, who had placed their trust in us as a business partner. I want to apologize both as a creator and as a member of PlatinumGames.”

Scalebound was going to be a massive action RPG exclusively for Xbox One and PC. At the time, there was a lot of hype for it since Kamiya had directed several universally beloved video games like Bayonetta, Okami, Devil May Cry and the original Resident Evil 2. Body of work aside, this was also Kamiya’s dream project.
“When I was a child, I don’t know if people overseas are familiar with these but I would play Sorcerian, Hydlide, all these fantasy games from the classic PC era that I really enjoyed,” Kamiya said via Cutscenes. “I always wanted to make something around that theme.”
Unfortunately for us all, Scalebound never came out. Perhaps that outcome is better than developers releasing something like Cyberpunk 2077 or the GTA Trilogy, where the result is a broken mess.
