Hidden names of Sunderland workers revealed 29 years after job at former Cleethorpes theatre

A search is on for a group of North East workers who carried out a job at a former Lincolnshire theatre almost 30 years ago.

The names of the men, from Sunderland, were found written on some plasterboard during restoration work at the former Empire Theatre, in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire.

It is believed they worked for Pattison Joiners/Builders of Sunderland and they might have travelled the 150 miles south to install a laser zone play area in the upper floors of the building in 1992.

David Smith, who is carrying out research into the Victorian building, is hoping the men or their relatives will come forward and speak about the work they did or provide photographs of the site.

Mr Smith, 63, of Cleethorpes, said: "This building was a theatre until 1960. After that it became a bingo parlour and then an amusement arcade downstairs.

"Upstairs, it became a laser zone play area. Some areas of the two upper floors were changed to accommodate the play area but there are still some original features above today's ground floor.

"In 1992, when the laser zone was being put in, workers from Sunderland came and did the work.

"There is some restoration work taking place at the building now and it has been stripped out. The laser zone has all been removed.

"And the names of the Sunderland workers were found hidden on some plasterboard.

"As part of my research into this building, it would be fascinating to find out what the workers remember about the job, and if they, or their families, have any photos before or after the work was done."

The names written on the plasterboard are – Terry Pattison (joiner-boss), then aged 45, Michael Pattison, then aged 21, J Panshaw (joiner), D Tench (joiner), D or P McBride (labourer), M McMann (labourer), T Haswell (bricklayer), Doyly, Derek, Bob and John (the sparkys).
