'Hidden' Merseyside cinema you may not know exists

A cinema you may not know existed sits tucked away behind the main strip of a Merseyside town centre.

The “Bijou” cinema in Southport screens a mix of modern and classic films on most days of the week.

The 70-seat cinema, on Post Office Avenue, sits within the town centre, but you could be forgiven for not knowing it was there.

Run by volunteers, Bijou bills itself as being “here to bring cinema to you: the community”.

Matinees and evening films include classics old and new, independent films and dynamic world cinema - and viewers are encouraged to recommend films for future screenings.

The ground floor features a café bar, which serves drinks one hour before and one hour after each film.

There is also and box office on ground floor. lagers, ales and wines, as well as assorted soft drinks, one hour before and after our film screenings.

The rest of the ground floor consists of the box office and, of course, the cinema - a raked auditorium with comfortable seats, a huge projector, and surround sound speakers.

There are wheelchairs spaces available, as well as an induction loop system installed.

Upstairs, on the first floor, is The Lounge, a spacious, large room with seating available for events and parties, and is accessible by lift.

Tickets for each film cost £6.
