'Hidden LEGO' is worth hundreds of pounds to UK households with families spending £755 during a lifetime

The average UK household currently has £160 worth of Lego stashed away with families spending £755 on the children's favourite during a lifetime.

A study by online marketplace OnBuy.com discovered Manchester is the location where most money is spent on LEGO, followed by London and Edinburgh.

OnBuy polled 2,000 members of the public to gain an insight on their buying habits to compile a list of where in the UK people spend the most on Lego.

It also asked whether the majority of their LEGO purchases had been for children, or in fact for themselves, and found that nearly two fifths (38 per cent) of adults admitted to buying it for personal use.

Cas Paton, founder and chief executive of OnBuy, said: "LEGO has long been one of the world’s favourite toys, appealing to generations young and old - and it’s a running joke that ‘everyone’s got some LEGO in their house’.

"But, we wanted to see just how much of the brand people actually had lying around, and how much it’s worth.

“Using our data and a study of people from around the UK, we were able to answer those questions, and what we discovered was actually really interesting.

"For a toy that’s been around for so long, it’s amazing to see people’s love for it hasn’t diminished and households still continue to spend large sums of money on the brand.”

OnBuy’s toy department also revealed the ten most expensive LEGO sets available to buy. The top five sets and their prices are as follows:

  1. Star Wars 75252 Imperial Destroyer - £649.99
  2. Star Wars Millennium Falcon - £649.99
  3. Technic 42009 Mobile Crane MK2 - £459.99
  4. Creator 10256 Taj Mahal - £299.99
  5. Disney Castle - £299.99

Five areas that spend most on Lego in a year, and the average amounts, are:

  1. Manchester - £258
  2. London - £234
  3. Edinburgh - £230
  4. Bristol - £211
  5. Bath - £205

The top 10 most expensive sets currently on the market, and the full list of areas of the UK that love LEGO the most, can be found here.
