'Hidden gem' water park with own beach, cafe and play area 90 minutes from Nottingham

This summer has seen plenty wanting to head to the coast to enjoy some time at the beach after the hot weather we've been having.

But we realise it's not always a feasible option for everyone in the East Midlands given our central location.

So one option that has been suggested is to go to a "hidden gem" inland beach and water park that is just under a 90-minute drive from Nottingham city centre.

Yorkshire Live reports that Hemsworth Water Park and Playworld, in Wakefield, is a perfect escape, with its own "beach", play area and a café.

And with a whole host of favourable reviews, it seems the perfect spot for parents wanting somewhere fun to take their little ones for a day out.

One person wrote: "Excellent place for couples and families, two small 'beach' areas, a park area and plenty of open grassy areas to sit and relax.

"Cleanliness of the park itself was above average, plenty of bins etc. The café was nice, and there was a kiosk too. The best thing about this place is that parking and entrance were free!

"Fantastic place to go if you are short of money. Highly recommended."

Another said: "Lovely park. A real little hidden gem! Highly recommended. Clean, spacious and safe. A lovely 'beach' area, a forest with a lake with ducks, and a huge kids' play area."

And another reviewer wrote: "Pleasant little find. Family friendly. Easy spend a good portion of the day here with the family. Family of 7 aged between 15 and 3 and everyone enjoyed it"

One person could not get enough of the food at the café, they said: "We visited the cafe and was served by a very friendly lady! The sausage rolls had just been taken out of the oven! They were lovely. She also recommended the salted caramel cheese cake! It was amazing. We will be definitely going back!!"

The spot has an overall rating of 3.5 stars on Tripadvisor with the majority of reviews a four-star rating.

And the pictures that reviewers have uploaded show the sunny spot in all its glory, with a large lake surrounded by trees and grass with plenty of space for children to play.

The beach is a reasonable size but looks as though it may quickly fill up, so worth getting there early to secure your spot on the sand - and don't forget the bucket and spades.
