Hibs winger Martin Boyle interesting Huddersfield Town and Stoke City as Championship duo step up chase

Hibernian winger Martin Boyle is on the shortlist of two English Championship sides as the Australian international enters the final year of his contract.

Reports suggest both Huddersfield Town and Stoke City are running the rule over the 27-year-old, who could be allowed to leave for a cut-price fee.

The Easter Road side have announced huge cuts to their annual budget after taking a hit from Scottish football's coronavirus-induced shutdown.

Huddersfield and Stoke are currently locked on 42 points each in 17th and 18th respectively ahead of the English Championship's restart this weekend.

Boyle scored five times in 20 league games before the season was halted due to the pandemic, his most prolific top flight return to date, after battling back from two serious knee injuries.

The jet-heeled winger has had a meteoric rise after joining the club on an initial loan deal from Dundee in 2014, picking up Scottish Cup and Scottish Championship winners' medals.

Boyle started the 2012/13 season on loan at League Two Montrose before being allowed to leave for Easter Road on a free just over two years later.

He has since become one of Hibs' key men, scoring 34 times in 188 games and receiving international honours with Australia after qualifying through his father's country of birth.

He scored a double on his first start for the Socceroos, also claiming an assist in a 3-0 win over Lebanon and would likely have played a part in the side's Copa America campaign this summer before the tournament was pushed back due to the pandemic.

Edinburgh Live revealed this morning that Hibs would offer non-playing staff voluntary redundancy as the club prepares to mothball its operation outside the first team.

The club announced on Monday it had also entered consultations with players and staff over potential wage cuts as the financial impact of COVID-19 hits hard.
