Hibs trialist Thomas Roberts teases loan move after American felt he was at Easter Road 'for a year'

Hibs trialist Thomas Roberts has hinted that he’s set for a loan move to Europe.

The American spent a month training with the Easter Road club alongside Charlston Battery pair Robbie Crawford and Leland Archer.

Hibs announced a partnership with the American club earlier this year - helped set up by owner Ron Gordon - which has seen players head across the pond for Jack Ross to have a look at.

But Thomas arrived from FC Dallas, where he still has a year left on his contract.

“I have a year left with FC Dallas. Next year I feel like I have to take the next step, get out of my comfort zone, and go over there and see how well I can do.

“I’ve seen all the success that Chris [Richards of Bayern Munich] has had and I want to do all the same things as him.

"I'm hoping to do a loan for six months and I think something is about to happen soon, so we'll see how that goes.

“Last February I was supposed to go on loan to Bayern Munich and then FC Dallas denied the loan because they said they wanted me to play and when it didn’t work out – I thought I was going to play, and I didn't end up playing – it was tough.”

Roberts spoke highly of his trial spell with the club but admitted he found the need to quarantine after his arrival tough.

"It was a great experience; I got there on November 1 but I had to quarantine for two weeks and that was definitely the lowlight of the trip,” he told the ChumChat Podcast.

"I couldn’t leave the apartment for that time; all I could do was sit and wait around – felt like I was in there for a year.

"Once that finished we had our first training session and I started with the reserve team but the next day we had to do a fitness test and that was the worst part. A fitness test a day out of quarantine… my legs were gone. It was brutal. It was sleeting, too.”

Roberts played in a couple of bounce matches in green and white, but didn’t do enough to convince the club to sign him.

He added: “We won 2-0 against Stenhousemuir; I scored the second, and I also played against Hamilton.”
