Hibs to get Hawk-Eye goal line technology benefit in Betfred Cup semi-final

Hibs will get the benefit of Hawk-Eye goal line technology in their Betfred Cup semi-final this weekend.

Jack Ross takes his team to Hampden to take on St Johnstone for a place in the final against either Livingston or St Mirren.

The system is also used in tennis and rugby union, and alerts the referee to the ball crossing the line within a second of it happening.

We saw it in action during the Scottish Cup final when Stephen Kinglsey’s header for Hearts against Celtic to make it 2-2 was confirmed to have gone in, although it took longer than a second for the goal to be awarded.

The good news is that there will now be no doubt about any goals Hibs do manage to score on Saturday, and the hope will be that St Johnstone won’t have any opportunity to test the system at the other end.

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster said: “The introduction of goal line technology to an SPFL competition for the first time is an exciting development.

"This is a system that has been proven to function quickly and effectively time and again. Indeed, we saw first-hand exactly how well it works when it was used in the Scottish Cup final in December.

“This is a positive step for the competition and we look forward to seeing the new system in action at the weekend and again at the final in February.”
