Hibs stars David Gray and Darren McGregor pen four-year extensions at Easter Road

Darren McGregor and David Gray have both extended their stays at Hibs - with a plan in place for them to move into coaching roles.

Both players, who were part of the Scottish Cup winning team in 2016, have signed four-year contracts that will see them eventually move into the backroom staff.

Gray, who scored the winning goal in the 2016 final against Rangers, has been at the club since July 2014 after leaving Burton Albion and was named club captain following the departure of Liam Craig.

McGregor, 33, joined the club in 2015 from Rangers and has been a huge success at his boyhood heroes.

And both players have been praised by boss Paul Heckingbottom who hailed their professionalism.

He said:  “I’m really pleased that we’ve been able to agree new contracts with Darren and David but, in reality, it was a quick conversation on both sides.

“We’re fortunate to have two experienced players of real quality and I have spoken repeatedly about their qualities as leaders and role models within our dressing room.

“From their perspective, this club clearly means the world to them and it can only be a good thing that they will continue to help shape it over the next four years.

“Be in no doubt, they are first team players. The challenge, for the pair of them, is to maintain that for as long as they can.”

McGregor spent the early part of his career playing part-time and junior football before getting his break with St Mirren in 2010.

He had worked in a shop selling jeans and he admits he can't believe he's made it to the top of Scottish football.

He told HibsTV: “Walking through that door four years ago was a dream come true.

“When I was 24 and folding jeans for a living in Xile, if you’d told me at 30 I’d be playing for Hibs, winning the Scottish Cup and having such a big influence in the team I’d have shaken my head in disbelief. If you work hard, the sky is the limit.”
