Hibs sign Garry O'Connor's son to first professional deal among new youth intake

Hibernian have signed Josh O'Connor, son of former Easter Road favourite Garry, to his first professional contract.

The 16-year-old put pen to paper on a deal with the club before the turn of the year after reportedly attracting interest from Chelsea and Rangers.

He has now been officially unveiled as one of the Leith side's latest batch of youth professionals starting at their East Mains training ground this year.

Posting on Twitter, he wrote: "Happy to sign for the club I support and love."

Dad Garry scored 75 times in more than 200 games for the club across two spells.

O'Connor is joined by the son of another former professional, Robbie Hamilton - whose dad Jim represented Hearts - in inking a professional deal, while Scotland youth international Murray Johnson has also officially signed on after training with the first team as a 15-year-old in the summer.

Fellow Scotland under-17 prospect Jacob Blaney, midfielder Murray Aiken have been given squad numbers after agreeing their deals while Jack Brydon and Connor Young, on loan at Lowland League side Civil Service Strollers, have signed professional contracts for the first time.

Hibs sporting director Graeme Mathie said: "It's great to announce the boys’ first professional contracts - it’s been a different start to their journey due to COVID but all have shown a great maturity to adapt to the challenges which can only help them on their journey.

"Good to have them all on board."
