Hibs sign Charlton defender Zach Mitchell on season-long loan

Hibernian have signed defender Zach Mitchell on a season-long loan from Charlton after he caught the eye of boss David Gray during his stint at St Johnstone last term.

The 20-year-old came through the Addicks academy and in addition to making 20 senior appearances for the London side, he has spent time on loan at both Colchester and Saints.

Mitchell made 10 appearances for the Perth club while they were still in the William Hill Premiership in the second half of last season.

The deal was concluded on Monday before the deadline, but there was a technical issue with FIFA’s transfer matching system which led to the announcement being delayed until Friday.

“We’re delighted to bring Zach into the building,” manager Gray told Hibs’ official website.

“Zach is a player that caught my eye during his brief spell at St Johnstone last season. He is a young defender with some great attributes and will add extra versatility, strength and depth to our back line.

“He is a young defender who is comfortable on the ball and has a good physical presence.”

Sporting director Malky Mackay added: “We’re pleased to be able to bring Zach to our club.

“Zach gives us extra strength in depth in our defensive options and is another talented, ambitious young player to add to the dressing room.”
