Hibs pledge support to Bertie Auld after Celtic icon diagnosed with dementia

Hibs have pledged their support to Bertie Auld after the Lisbon Lion's dementia battle was revealed.

Celtic released a statement on behalf of the 83-year-old's family on Thursday confirming he was living with the disease at home.

Auld finished his playing career at Easter Road after his European Cup-winning spell with the Parkhead club.

He was then appointed Hibs manager in 1980 following the club's relegation from the Premier Division and tasked with returning the team to the top-flight.

He led the Hibees to the First Division title a year later before being replaced by Pat Stanton in 1982.

A Tweet from Hibs' official account sent well-wishes to their former player and manager after the news of his diagnosis was made public.

The post read: "Our thoughts are with former Hibee midfielder and manager, Bertie Auld and his family"

Theirs was just one message of support from across the football world.

Celtic's statement had urged supporters of all clubs to rally behind a "true icon".

The statement said: “Bertie Auld's family would like all Celtic fans and football fans in general to keep Bertie in their prayers as they confirmed today that he is suffering with Dementia.

“The family would like to thank everyone for their huge support and request privacy during this difficult time.

“Bertie is being well cared for at his own home, surrounded by all the family.

“Everyone at Celtic would like to add their best wishes to Bertie and his family. Bertie is a true Celtic icon, one of our greatest sons and someone the club and our supporters love and respect dearly.

“We will continue to give Bertie and his family all our love, care and our ongoing full support at this hugely challenging time.”
