Hibs owner Ron Gordon insists club should have valued past stars more and current crop won't be sold for sake of it

Hibs owner Ron Gordon has insisted the Easter Road club should have valued their past stars more highly, whilst also claiming the current group of players won't be sold just for the sake of it.

The Hibees are recovering from Saturday afternoon's devastating 1-0 Scottish Cup final defeat to St. Johnstone at Hampden, with Jack Ross's men putting in an insipid and underwhelming display in the showpiece event.

But despite the lacklustre performance, Hibs have still enjoyed a very strong campaign, with a third-place finish in the Scottish Premiership to add to their cup final appearance.

The likes of Martin Boyle, Kevin Nisbet and teenage sensation Josh Doig have all been linked with moves away this summer - but Gordon is adamant that any outgoing deals must be in the interests of the Leith side.

Speaking via the Edinburgh Evening News, Gordon said: "The interests of the players are important to us but, ultimately, not at the expense of the club so what I would like to see us do now is build on the squad we have.

"There may be a consensus at some stage that we do move a player on but I don’t think we should be thinking of ourselves as a club that is willing to sell players just because somebody offers us money.

"To some degree, with the possible exception of John McGinn, we should have valued our players more [in the past]. Our number one priority is to compete and nothing we do should ever get in the way of that."
